When I became my late wife's hereditary cancer caregiver, I was dismayed to find that many adults
have a genuine lack of understanding when it comes to how genes work. And even fewer
understand the connection between genes and cancer. I often found myself trying to explain my wife’s diagnosis, what a BRCA2 mutation is, and how her cancer could have been prevented had relatives shared information about the mutation years before her diagnosis. In addition, I had to also try to explain how my adult child ended up with the exact same BRCA2 mutation as her mother. So, being a professional creative with years of experience producing educational materials, I started making infographics to try to explain more about genes, mutations, and to try to help prevent others from dying a horrible death like my beloved wife did. This booklet, produced with some helpful feedback from a certified genetic counselor and educator, is an offshoot of those efforts. Mark A. Hicks
